It’s been more than 50 years since The Champagne Brothers first recorded their hit It’s Raining at Houston’s legendary SugarHill Recording Studios. But, thanks the engaging new two disk release from SugarHill Studios, Hits from the Hill, this 1967 chart topper will be heard again by longtime fans and for the first time by new audiences.
SugarHill is celebrating the release of Hits from the Hill with a bash at Continental Club on Sunday, December 4. The lineup, including Allen Oldies Band, Roy Head, Don Sanders, Champion Sisters, Chet Daniels, Kenny Cordray‘s Love Street, John Evans, Glenna Bell and Row Zero is sure to make for a fun filled afternoon. Admission is free, but all proceeds from CD sales go to benefit the Musicians’ Benevolent Society of Houston. Doors @ 1PM!
Jon Langford (the Mekons, Waco Brothers, Pine Valley Cosmonauts) visits Sig’s Lagoon for a reading/signing of his books, Skull Orchard Revisted & Nashville Radio: Art, Words, & Music.
The starting point was his long unobtainable album Skull Orchard. For the CD available exclusively with this book, Langford returned to those lost recordings and radically revised them, enlisting as his accomplices the Burlington Welsh Male Chorus, who contribute a unique warmth to the material.
Jon illustrated his lyrics for Skull Orchard, at once autobiographical and fanciful, in a set of “song paintings” created especially for this book, which also includes much more artwork, an A to Z of South Walian culture and history (both personal and general) by Jon’s brother, and acclaimed SF writer David Langford, photographs by their father, Denis Langford, and Jon’s first published story, a witty, dystopian tale about a whale and a dolphin.
“Lyrically, he creates a picture of a town of physical people who’ve lost their place in a technological world, but his punk background shows up in his love of the hard-charging song, which adds a rebellious (and therefore hopeful) voice to the songs. In fact, it’s only when you break the songs down to the lyrics that the darkness is evident; on a casual listen, it’s one of his most consistently hard-driving, entertaining albums.”–Offbeat New Orleans
Nashville Radio is the first collection of his acclaimed art. It reproduces 215 paintings and etchings, alongs with song lyrics and autobiographical writings. The book also comes with a specially recorded exclusive CD of Langford performing 18 of the printed songs.
